Easy on the eyes – tips for taking care of your eyes
The eyes are a key feature of the face. Besides helping us to see, they play a part in our appearance, and also help us to communicate our emotions. While the importance of skincare is often talked about, eye care is something that shouldn’t be overlooked either. Don’t turn a blind eye – read on to learn how you can care for the windows to your soul for healthy, beautiful eyes!
1. Eat food that does your eyes good
Ever wondered if the saying that carrots are good for eyesight is just a myth? It’s in fact true! Carrots are high in beta-carotene used by the body to make vitamin A, which is essential for good vision. Other vitamins, nutrients and minerals that help strengthen eyesight include lutein, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins C and E, and zinc. Keeping your eyes healthy can be as easy as starting with your diet and there are many foods in which you can find these vision-boosting components, such as citrus fruits, grapes and berries, green leafy vegetables, and fish like salmon, tuna, sardines and mackerel.
2. Use proper lighting
Many of us are guilty of reading in dim light – the temptation of snuggling under the covers just before bedtime with a good book or scrolling through Facebook is hard to resist. While dim lighting does not have a direct impact on eyesight, it tires your eyes out more quickly and can even cause headaches. It’s best to use a reading light or desk lamp and shine it directly onto your reading material.
3. Give your eyes a break
If you spend a lot of time using a computer in a day, it’s easy to suffer from eye strain or tired eyes. Furthermore, those of us who are glued to our screens for long periods of time tend to forget to blink as often, which can cause eyes to feel dry and uncomfortable. Remind yourself to blink regularly so that your eyes stay well lubricated, and to lessen fatigue, remember to rest and relax your eyes. Try the 20-20-20 rule: for every 20 minutes, focus for 20 seconds on something at least 20 feet (roughly 6 metres) away.
