
Get a move on: exercises you can do at home for better blood circulation
What’s your routine when the wet season comes around in Singapore? Some of us bring out our warmest sweaters, while others crave for comforting, hot soups to warm our stomachs. In cold weather, our physical fitness typically drops because we stay indoors, leading to slower blood circulation. That’s not to mention that the flu season tends to come hand in hand with drops in temperature, making us more susceptible to falling sick from a weakened immune system. Exercise 1: Improve gastrointestinal functions
How to: Lie down, hug your knees, and inhale. As you exhale, drop your knees to the left, using your left hand to push them down gently. Then, turn your head and stretch your arm out to the right. Stay for five to ten breaths. Inhale, and return your hands and knees to centre. Repeat on the other side.
Benefits: Helps to reduce the possibility of constipation or diarrhoea. It is also the perfect pose for those holding desk jobs.
Exercise 2: Relax tired legs and feet
How to: Lie on your back and keep your feet against the wall for 3 to 5 minutes.
Benefits: Reduces swelling in the feet, ankles and knees as it helps to drain fluids from the legs. This pose also increases blood circulation in the upper body and brings back balance after spending a long time on your feet.
Exercise 3: Relieve back tension
How to: Get on your hands and knees on the floor in the yoga poses of the cat and cow. Inhale, making sure your back is flat and your abs are engaged. Exhale, drop your head and round up your spine for the cat pose. On an inhale, arch your back, lifting your head and backside for the cow pose. Switch back and forth between the two poses, syncing your inhale with the cow pose and exhale with the cat pose. Repeat several times.
Benefits: Warms up your spine and relieves tension in your back and neck.
